Supplies for Musicians

 

Each student will need an instrument, we have several instruments including tuba, baritone, trombone, oboe, and bassoon for rent from the school. These are on a first come first serve basis.  All students who wish to check out an instrument from the school must pay the YCSD instrument rental fee of $30 to the school.

 

All band students are required to have a method book, cleaning kit, metronome, and tuner.  The following items are needed for the students:

 

Flute:  Cleaning/Tuning Rod

Oboe:  Feather swab, at least 2 good reeds

Clarinet: Instrument swab, 3-5 working reeds (Vandoren preferred), cork grease

Alto Sax:  Instrument swab, 3-5 working reeds (Vandoren preferred), cork grease

Trumpet:  Valve Oil and mouthpiece

French Horn:  Rotor Oil and mouthpiece

Trombone:  Slide Oil/Grease and mouthpiece

Tuba:  Valve Oil and mouthpiece

Percussion:  Vic Firth Drum sticks; Practice pad, Yarn Mallet Sticks, Percussion Bag


Use and Care of Instruments

  • Please take proper care of your instrument. Clean out the instrument of spit, wash

  • mouthpiece at least once a week. Brass instruments – clean the whole instrument at least once a year.

  • Rinse mouth out if eating before you play your instrument

  • Do NOT place bigger instruments on chairs

  • Do NOT use soap and water to clean out your instrument

  • Please do not attempt to fix a broken instrument. Bring the instrument to Ms. Rakowski as she has taken an instrument repair class or take it to a repair shop to get fixed. Attempting to fix it yourself could possibly cause more damage.

 

Use and Care of Music

  • Do not fold, tear or otherwise mutilate music.

  • Use only pencil when marking music.  Be neat when marking music, and make only those marks that are absolutely necessary.  Marks should be erased before music is turned in.

  • Students will be held financially responsible for music that is not cared for properly.

  • Each student will be assigned a slot in a music folio cabinet.

  • Folders will be assigned according to parts and instrumentation.  Each folder will be assigned a number that corresponds to a slot in a music folio cabinet.

  • Personally owned music should not be kept in the music folio cabinet.

  • Do not put folders and/ or music in your instrument case.

  • Folders and/ or music are not to be stored in the instrument storage room.

  • Do not place stickers or other decorations on school-owned music folders.
